Welcome

Welcome to the course Fundamentals of Product innovation, which is essential for the economic success of every organization. In order to (continue to) deliver value to its customers and thus to earn money, every organization has to bring a new good or service (both are products) onto the market at some point in time. The course Fundamentals of Product Innovation focuses on the topics of (i) how the process of developing and launching new products looks like, on (ii) what are the objectives of product innovation , and on (iii) how organizations can successfully manage the fuzzy front end, development and launch of new products.

The figure below shows the different phases (The Fuzzy Front End, Product Development, Product Launch ) of the new product development (NPD) process that will be covered in the course.

🏁 Learning Objectives

Students completing this course will be able to:

name the objectives of product innovation management, describe the processes of product innovation, and explain the importance of their successful management;
name and describe the key terms, theories, and frameworks associated with successful product innovation process management;
apply theories and frameworks in product innovation practice;
analyze existing product innovation processes used in practice and give recommendations on how to improve them; and
compile and evaluate up-to-date theories on successful product innovation process management and use these to develop management and recommendations.

🖍️ Course structure

The course relies on independent self-study, lectures, team assignments and colloquium . You will be expected to independently develop a deliberate understanding of the required key terms, theories, models and frameworks and autonomously apply these in initiating, planning, and carrying out assignments. Just like in practice, the assignments are characterized by a limited time frame for making decisions and performing activities based on imperfect information.

✍️ TEAM ASSIGNMENTS AND COLLOQUIUM

1ZV50 feature three team assignments based on the concept of challenge-based learning to achieve learning objectives 3 to 5. The assignments are to be conducted in teams of 6 students. Teams stay the same for all three assignments. Please find the detailed information related to team assignments group formation and registration along with instructions related to team assignments and colloquium directly below.

ASSIGNMENT TEAM FORMATION & REGISTRATION

You are responsible for registering in an assignment team of 6 students on CANVAS (People > Assignment TEAM). If you are not able to find team members then please contact the team members of partially complete assignment teams and check if you could join their team. Please make sure to register yourself in an assignment team in time as team compositions will not be changed on request. Also, teams with more or less than 6 members are not possible. Registration closes on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 12:00 hrs. Please note that if you have not registered yourself in any assignment team or joined any assignment team before the assignment team registration deadline then that means that you do not want to participate in the course. As such, you will not be able to conduct the assignments and, hence, not be able to pass the course. After the registration deadline, registered teams with less than 6 team members may be merged randomly by the course lecturer .

📝 Course grade and Examination

There are two components to the course grade that are weighted as follows:

In the final exam the achievement of learning objectives 1 to 5 will be tested, with a focus on objectives 1 and 2. The exam will consist of of multiple-choice questions that are based on the course book, study materials/articles assigned for lectures and assignments, guest lectures, lecture slides, assignment feedback, and discussions related to lectures and colloquiums.

Please note the following:

In line with Bachelor College regulations formalized in the OER/PER, to pass 1ZV50:
- The individual grades for team assignments component (all 3 team assignments together) should be at least 5.0;
- The grade for the exam has to be at least 5.0;
- The final weighted grade has to be at least 5.5. If the final grade is lower than 5.5 or the grade of the exam is lower than 5.0, the resit examination needs to be taken.
If a student still fails to pass 1ZV50 after taking the resit exam, then the student in accordance with the OER/PER should redo the entire course including the team assignments.
The three team assignments are an integral part of the course. A student can only participate in the exam (or the resit exam) when he/she has participated in the completion of all three team assignments. The latter will be judged from the fact that the student’s name appears on all three assignment reports.
