We have improved the course based on the following suggestions:

1. Some students did expect that we provide some classical lectures of our own (beyond the ones we already provided in the context of the course and assignment kick-off, Q&A, …). We understand the request. From 2021 onwards, we provide some lectures by ourselves instead of relying 100% on guest lectures
2. We should monitor that our student/teaching assistants provide timely replies on Canvas Stricter agreements are made with course assistants. Students are encouraged to escalate when appropriate.
3. We were encouraged to revisit the relevance of the book (or some chapters of it) From 2021 onwards, we put less emphasis on the book, considering that overall the volume of the study materials is pretty large already.
4. A bottleneck was the high pressure on the teaching staff (many assignments/tests to grade, many Q&A sessions) (a) We will simplify the feedback process by streamlining the Rubrics used for the assessment; (b) we have re-organized the assignment weights, and we have reduced the number of Q&As based on their actual use in 2020.
5. Lecturers also felt that interoperability was covered too theoretically. From 2021 onwards, one of the assignments will address interoperability from a very practical point of view. Also, additional tutorials are provided to prepare students well for that new assignment.
6. Various students appear to lack motivation to study the articles, book, and recorded lectures. While we do count also on intrinsic motivation for the study subject, and while existing mechanisms had already been offered (e.g., a book reading club), we are offering additional instruments (e.g., motivational clips, additional intermediate tests, etc.) from 2025 onwards.

⛔ Academic fraud

It is strongly prohibited to commit fraud. With any suspicion of fraudulent behavior, the exam committee will be contacted to decide whether or not fraud occurred. Fraud includes any behavior or negligence on part of the student that makes it impossible for an examiner to form a correct judgment of his or her knowledge, insight and skills, or that is aimed at intentionally manipulating the examination process.

Types of fraud:

  • Exam fraud
    Having a mobile telephone and/or any other communication, storage and/or display devices on your desk or on your person;
    Using or attempting to use unauthorized recourses and aids such as smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets, including materials other than listed on the front page of the exam (i.e. a calculator or book in case of an open book exam).
  • Plagiarism
    In the assignment, plagiarism can be committed when copied material, not written by the responsible students, is integrated into the report
  • Scientific fraud
    Fabricating or improvising data

Consequences

When a suspicion of fraud is raised during or after exams or projects, the student receives no grade (yet), and the case is handed over to the exam committee.

The default penalty for the first time offenders is: 

  • The student fails on the entire course (even when plagiarism occurred in a small intermediate assignment)
  • The student is excluded from taking the exams of that course for one year.
  • The misconduct will be entered into the student's file
  • The student is no longer eligible for a judicial when graduating (met hoge waardering / cum laude)

The maximum penalty (e.g., for a recidivist)

  • Student's education at TU/e will be terminated

Relation with other subjects
This course is one of the two courses in the healthcare elective package of Bachelor Industrial Engineering.

Relevance of the subject for the domain
The health care industry is one of the most information-intensive sectors in our society. Consequently, information systems that support health care operations and support prevention are advancing rapidly. They improve operational excellence as well as the management of modern health care organizations and the overarching system. It is therefore very important to learn about information technology and information management functions in health care organizations as well as current health care computing issues that health service organizations face.

Prior knowledge and admission criteria
Osiris lists as prerequisites: "Familiarity with the basic principles of information and process modeling (UML class diagrams and BPMN diagrams) may provide an advantage, but it is not required, strictly."

These prerequisites can be covered via TU/e courses such as Fundamentals of Business Information Systems [1BV00], and Design of Business Information Systems [1BV10].

If you are motivated to spend extra time for catching up on the missing prior knowledge/skills then there should not be a problem. In particular, you can already follow tutorials on data modeling (e.g.,  https://developer.ibm.com/technologies/web-development/articles/the-class-diagram/ excluding the part on association classes). To be really on the same level of others in TU/e who followed 1BV00/1BV10, it is also advisable to follow a series of Tutorials on the Mendix Studio tool ( https://docs.mendix.com/studio-how-to/domain-model-how-to-configure ).

🤝 Code of Conduct Social Safety & Scientific Integrity

Within the teaching environment, all interactions between staff and students should be driven by elementary politeness, scientific integrity, good faith and trust. These characteristics, in particular elementary politeness, should be part of all discussion sessions, course evaluations and e-mail conversations between teachers and students. According to the TU/e Code of Scientific Conduct, scientific integrity comprehends as central values trustworthiness, intellectual honesty, openness, independence and societal responsibility. These values are part of the scientific discourse during teaching. Good faith is rooted in the sincere belief by all participants in the teaching process that arguments are presented without any malice or the desire to defraud others. Although scientific arguments are challenging, participants in the discussion should be able to trust that these arguments are never intended to harm or emotionally hurt anybody.

In cases in which violations of the personal boundaries occur and social safety concerns emerge, these violations should be addressed, preferably first in a personal conversation with the staff and students affected and, if necessary, with the confidential contact persons (peer listeners) or the confidential advisors at the University.
